The surprise EP by rapper Missy Elliott titled Iconology comes less than a week before the artist is to receive the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards. On the extended play, Missy starts by with a confident anthem and lead single to the EP, “Throw It Back,” which takes the best back to Elliott’s roots and proving she’s still got it three decades into her career.
“I did records for Tweet before y’all could even tweet,” the rapper boasts with an homage to her 2002 single “Oh, My” with R&B artist tweet, a song that was also produced by Timbaland. From there, Missy takes us into “Cool Off”, a catchy, peanut butter club banger that has us bouncing to an old school hip hop beat with a modern Missy spin. Iconology then slows it down for us with “DripDemeanor,” a collaboration with up-and-coming vocalist Sum1.
Perhaps the most surprising is the closing to this EP, with Missy ElliotT showing off singing capability on “Why I Still Love You.” It’s a soulful song that has Missy singing about why she keeps coming back to a cheating lover, and realizing that she doesn’t need him anymore. To prove her vocal chops, Missy even included an a-capella version of the track to close out this multifaceted extended play.
While short, Iconology takes us back to old Missy and introduces us to who Missy is now 14 years after her last independent release. It’s an exciting journey, and we can only hope for a taste of more. Be sure to check out Missy Elliott receive her vanguard award at this year’s VMAs on Monday 8/26 at 8pm/7c.
